Offinso South Assembly Deadlocked as Presiding Member Race Heads to Second Round

OFFINSO SOUTH — The Offinso South Municipal Assembly remains without a presiding member after two inconclusive rounds of voting on Thursday left both candidates short of the required majority.

In the first round, Hon. Kwabena Nsiah secured 24 votes out of 34 cast, but fell short of the 50 percent threshold needed for an outright win.

His contender, Hon. Abugri Simon, polled 17 votes, while three ballots were rejected. Ghana’s local government rules mandate that a candidate must obtain more than half of valid votes to be elected.

The second round produced a reversal in fortunes. Hon. Abugri Simon increased his tally to 25 votes, while Hon. Kwabena Nsiah dropped to 17, again leaving neither candidate with a decisive margin.

After the vote, Hon. Nsiah thanked assembly members for their support and urged them not to be intimidated by his opponent or the NDC chairman.

Hon. Abugri Simon described the outcome as a reminder that elections are unpredictable and said he remains confident of securing victory in the next round.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Offinso South called on delegates to resolve the impasse quickly, warning that the prolonged delay is hampering the assembly’s daily operations and slowing development projects in the municipality.

The assembly is expected to reconvene for another round of voting to break the deadlock.
