BREAKING: Police Announce Traffic Diversion on Accra-Kumasi Highway After Major Crash at Birimso Bridge
The Ghana Police Service has announced a temporary traffic diversion on the Accra-Kumasi Highway following a multi-vehicle crash that has blocked the Birimso Bridge on the N6 Highway.
In a public notice issued on Monday, August 4, 2026, the Police said the pile-up involved a high-occupancy passenger bus, a loaded articulated truck and a sedan, resulting in the complete blockage of both the Accra and Kumasi-bound sections of the highway.
According to the notice, the crash occurred on the Birimso Bridge stretch, a critical point on the N6, making it impossible for vehicles to pass through in either direction.
The Police said personnel from the Eastern South Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department [MTTD], based in Kibi, have been deployed to the scene to manage traffic and facilitate the clearance of the road.
Motorists travelling from Accra towards Kumasi and vice versa are advised to exercise extreme caution, cooperate with police officers on the ground and use alternative routes where possible while efforts are underway to tow the wrecked vehicles and restore traffic flow.
Police have directed that traffic will be temporarily diverted to allow emergency and recovery operations. Drivers approaching the crash scene are urged to follow directions from MTTD officers and observe temporary road signs erected around the area.
The Police have not yet confirmed casualties but indicated that emergency services are at the scene.
“We apologize for the inconvenience and urge all road users to remain patient and adhere to traffic directives,” the statement said.
The Police assured the public that updates would be provided as soon as the road is fully cleared and reopened to traffic.
