NPP Accuses NDC of using state agencies for political vendetta against party members
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of using state agencies to intimidate and harass its members for expressing dissenting views on national issues.
Speaking at a press conference at the party’s headquarters in Accra yesterday, the Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, alleged that the NDC was hiding behind state institutions to witch-hunt NPP officials.
The press briefing focused on the recent arrest of the NPP’s Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe Abronye. According to Afenyo-Markin, Abronye was arrested last week and has since been denied bail by the court despite multiple appeals from his legal team.
“Some of our communicators and regional officers have been arrested simply for expressing their views on developments in the country,” the Efutu MP stated. “This is a clear attempt to silence opposition voices and stifle free speech.”
Afenyo-Markin stressed the constitutional right to freedom of expression and called on state institutions to uphold their mandate impartially. He urged civil society organisations, human rights activists, and Ghanaians at large to hold the government accountable to the 1992 Constitution, which guarantees freedom of speech and expression.
“The NPP does not condone attacks from any quarter, but we support constructive criticism in the national interest,” he added. “Democracy thrives when divergent views are allowed to be expressed without fear of reprisal.”
The Minority Leader called on the public to resist what he described as a growing pattern of political intimidation, warning that targeting political opponents through state agencies undermines democratic principles.
