Limit Children’s Freedom to Instill Discipline – Nana Kwaku Agyei
Traditional leader says unchecked freedom breeding indiscipline among youth; calls on parents to reclaim parental control

The Gyaasehene of Ejisu Tikrom in the Ejisu Municipality of the Ashanti Region, Nana Kwaku Agyei, has urged Ghanaian parents to place reasonable limits on the freedom granted to their children as a means of instilling discipline and good moral values.
According to him, the growing trend of giving children excessive freedom without guidance is contributing to rising indiscipline in homes and schools, a situation he warned could jeopardize the future of the country if not checked.
Nana Kwaku Agyei made the call when he addressed the 15th Graduation Ceremony of Shepherd International School at Atonsu Kuwait in Kumasi on Saturday.
He stressed that discipline remains the bedrock for raising responsible, respectful and successful future leaders.
“Discipline is the foundation for every child’s success. If we fail to correct our children today because we want to give them too much freedom, we are destroying their future. Parents must set boundaries, monitor their movements, their friends, and what they do on phones and social media,” he said.
The traditional leader commended teachers and school authorities for their role in shaping the character of pupils, but noted that the primary responsibility of discipline starts from the home. He called for stronger collaboration between parents and teachers to enforce moral training both at school and at home.
He further cautioned children against copying foreign lifestyles that conflict with Ghanaian cultural values, urging them to remain humble, obedient and God-fearing as they climb the academic ladder.
Meanwhile, speaking to the media after the ceremony, the Proprietor of Shepherd International School, Mr. George Akwasi Oppong, reaffirmed the school’s commitment to its core vision of nurturing disciplined, knowledgeable, and quality leaders who will contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s development.
He said the school over the past 15 years has remained focused on academic excellence anchored on strong moral discipline, adding that the 2026 graduating class has been well-prepared to excel at the next level of their education.
Mr. Oppong thanked parents for their continuous support and appealed to them to continue to complement the efforts of the school in training the children.
The colourful ceremony brought together chiefs, parents, teachers, pupils and invited guests, and saw graduating pupils awarded certificates of honour for academic excellence and good conduct.
