Minority Issues Ultimatum: Pay All Teachers’ Arrears By October 31 Or Risk Fresh Strike

By Dominic Duut

The Minority in Parliament has issued a strong call to government to settle all outstanding promotion arrears owed to teachers by October 31, 2026, or risk another nationwide shutdown of schools.

The call was made by the Member of Parliament for Offinso North and member of the Education Committee, Hon. Dr. Fred Kyei Asamoah, on behalf of the Minority Caucus.

According to him, the call follows the suspension of the two-week nationwide strike by the three pre-tertiary teacher unions – GNAT, NAGRAT and PRETAG.

Dr. Asamoah said every teacher who was promoted must be placed on the right salary scale with all arrears calculated from January 1, 2026, fully paid by October 31.

He noted that teachers returned to the classroom based on assurances from government, and it is imperative that government honours its part of the agreement.

He warned that the unions have been clear  if government fails to meet the agreed timelines, they will resume the strike.

It will be recalled that government agreed to pay 51,000 teachers by October 16 and the rest by October 31, 2026.

Allowances such as the Digital Instruction Support Allowance and the Continuous Professional Development Allowance will be paid in November and December respectively.
