Complete The Wamfie Astroturf, Don’t Demolish It — Dormaa East NPP Vice Chairman To MP

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Vice Chairman for Dormaa East Constituency in the Bono Region, Mr. Anthony Kwabena Oppong, has called on the Member of Parliament, Hon. Rachael Ama Owusuaa, and the District Chief Executive, Hon. Osei Owusu King, to rescind any decision to demolish the Wamfie Astroturf project and instead prioritize its completion.

The project, initiated by former MP Hon. Paul Apraku Twum Barimah, has become a subject of concern following reports that a grader was deployed to remove surface chippings from the facility at Wamfie, the district capital. The development has reportedly generated tension among some youth and NPP constituency leaders.

Speaking at a press conference, Mr. Oppong said the NPP had no problem with the NDC but insisted that development in the district should take precedence over partisan interests. He argued that public funds being used for the demolition exercise could instead be channeled towards completing the project for the benefit of residents.

He urged the NDC administration to reconsider its position and ensure that unfinished projects inherited from previous governments are completed where necessary, rather than abandoned or destroyed for political reasons.

Meanwhile, Dormaa East NPP Director of Communications, Mr. Ransford Nkum, said the NPP completed several projects initiated by the NDC when it was in opposition, arguing that unfinished development projects should not be destroyed simply because they were started by a rival political party.

He maintained that the NDC could complete projects it considered relevant, just as the NPP believed the existing Astroturf should be preserved and completed.

For his part, Dormaa East NPP Constituency Secretary, Mr. Albert Oteng, claimed that the project was about 75 per cent complete when the NPP left office. He also alleged that the MP had connived with some youth to destroy part of the pitch’s inner perimeter, although he said he had initially doubted the allegations.

Mr. Oteng called on the MP to complete the first phase of the project to provide a sporting facility for the youth, stressing that if she could not complete it, she should not seek to destroy it.
