Ghana Catholic Bishops’ President Urges Parliament to Pass Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill in Original Form

Accra, Ghana – The President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, has called on Parliament to pass the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill exactly as originally drafted, warning against any attempt to weaken its provisions.

Speaking on Citi FM’s debate on the controversial legislation, Most Rev. Gyamfi said supporters of the bill expect lawmakers to approve the version initially submitted.

“We don’t want a disfigured law or a hollow law. Parliament must pass what we sent to them,” he stated. “We are watching them, they should do what Ghanaians want.”

The Catholic bishop cautioned that significant alterations could undermine the bill’s purpose and fail to address the concerns that prompted its introduction.

He argued that proponents have consistently pushed for measures reflecting Ghana’s cultural, religious, and family values.

Commonly called the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, the legislation remains one of Ghana’s most debated.

Supporters say it seeks to preserve traditional family values, while critics argue it could infringe on fundamental human rights and freedoms.

Most Rev. Gyamfi’s remarks add to growing pressure from religious groups for Parliament to expedite consideration and retain the bill’s key provisions.

The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has been among the faith bodies publicly backing the bill, saying it aligns with the moral convictions of many Ghanaians.

Parliament is yet to announce when it will take the next major step on the bill, which continues to draw intense national and international attention.
