Ashanti GJA Secretary Calls for Urgent Completion of Sewua, Afari Hospitals Amid KATH Emergency Crisis

Ashanti GJA Secretary Calls for Urgent Completion of Sewua, Afari Hospitals Amid KATH Emergency Crisis.

The Ashanti Regional Secretary of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Beatrice Spio-Garbrah, has called for the immediate completion and operationalization of the Sewua Regional Hospital and the Afari Military Hospital to help address the growing pressure on the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

Her appeal follows the temporary suspension of admissions at KATH’s Accident and Emergency Unit due to overwhelming patient numbers and capacity challenges.

The development has raised concerns about access to emergency healthcare services in the Ashanti Region, with accident victims, stroke patients and other critically ill patients facing delays in receiving treatment or being referred to facilities outside the region.

In a Facebook post, Ms Spio-Garbrah described the crisis as extremely serious and expressed concern over the strain on the region’s only referral hospital.

According to her, the completion and operationalization of the Sewua Regional Hospital and the Afari Military Hospital would significantly reduce the burden on KATH and improve healthcare delivery in the region.

She noted that while both facilities have the potential to provide substantial support, they remain unable to do so because they have not been fully completed and made operational.

“The situation is not pleasant. This is not politics; this is about lives. Finish the hospitals,” she stated.

Ms Spio-Garbrah urged government, health authorities, stakeholders and the general public to treat the completion of the two hospitals as an urgent priority.

She believes the move would help save lives, improve emergency response and strengthen healthcare services across the Ashanti Region.
