Mini Lagoon Overflows, Submerges Homes in Parts of Winneba

Winneba, Central Region – Several homes in parts of Winneba have been submerged after the Muni Lagoon overflowed its banks following heavy rains, displacing residents and destroying property.

The floodwaters rose rapidly, forcing affected families to abandon their homes and seek safety elsewhere. Videos and photos from the impacted areas show rooms, streets, and household belongings inundated with water, with many residents wading through the flood to salvage what they can.

Affected residents say the flooding is not new, but its frequency and impact are worsening.

They describe the situation as a major concern that continues to destroy homes and disrupt livelihoods, especially for traders and fishers who depend on the lagoon area.

Residents have blamed the perennial flooding on two key issues: poor drainage systems in the town and the failure to regularly dredge the lagoon’s estuary.

They argue that silt buildup at the estuary blocks the free flow of water into the sea, causing the lagoon to spill over during heavy rains.

“We lose our mattresses, fridges, and food every year when it rains like this,” one resident told reporters. “If they dredge the estuary and fix the drains, we won’t keep suffering.”

With more rain forecast, residents are calling on the Effutu Municipal Assembly, NADMO, and central government to urgently intervene.

Their demands include immediate dredging of the Muni Lagoon estuary, desilting of major drains, and a long-term flood mitigation plan to safeguard lives and property.

Authorities are yet to comment on the extent of damage or relief measures for the displaced households.
