Greater Accra Minister Demands Tighter Building Regulation Enforcement

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, has issued a strong warning to officials involved in building regulation enforcement, stating that those who approve illegal developments risk being transferred to the northern part of Ghana as a form of punishment.

She made the comments during an enforcement exercise targeting illegal structures, where she expressed frustration over the role of some planning officers and assembly staff in permitting unlawful construction activities.

According to her, the situation where officials allegedly issue or endorse permits for illegal buildings undermines government efforts to enforce planning laws and protect public land and infrastructure.

She stressed that any officer found culpable in approving illegal structures would face strict sanctions, including possible administrative transfers. Her remarks were widely interpreted as suggesting that postings to northern Ghana could serve as a disciplinary measure, a statement that later sparked public debate.

The minister explained that such misconduct contributes to the rapid rise of unauthorized developments, flooding risks, and weak urban planning enforcement in parts of Accra and other urban areas.

Following the backlash, she later clarified that her comments were not meant to insult or demean any region, especially the northern parts of Ghana, and insisted they were made in the context of discussing administrative sanctions for misconduct.

She also reaffirmed that government policy on staff postings is guided strictly by civil service rules and not meant to punish or stigmatize any region.

The statement comes amid ongoing demolition exercises targeting illegal structures in protected and unauthorized areas, where the minister has repeatedly emphasized accountability for officials who fail in their duties.

Overall, her message centered on tightening enforcement, holding public officials accountable, and discouraging the approval of illegal buildings through stronger disciplinary measures.
