New intervention set for Agogo Offinso M/A Primary School in the Ashanti Region to tackle absenteeism caused by period poverty and lack of learning materials
Offinso, Ashanti Region– Mr. Benjamin Ofosu Owusu-Ansah, popularly known as Akuraase Nurse, is launching a new intervention to support school children in one of the hardest-to-reach communities in the Offinso Municipality.
The program will be officially unveiled at Agogo Offinso M/A Primary School as part of a broader effort to keep pupils, especially girls, in school and learning with dignity.
The initiative centers on two practical solutions designed to remove barriers that push children out of the classroom:
The program will establish a Menstrual Pad Bank to provide free sanitary pads to adolescent girls in the school and surrounding communities.
In many rural areas, girls miss several days of school each month because they cannot afford menstrual hygiene products.
The bank aims to ensure that no girl stays home due to menstruation, allowing her to attend school with confidence and dignity.
A second component will create an Exercise Book Bank for pupils who cannot afford basic learning materials.
For some families, the absence of a single exercise book is enough reason to keep a child at home to help on the farm.
Mr.Benjamin (kuraase Nurse) recalled witnessing a pupil forced to accompany his mother to the farm simply because he had no book.
The bank will prevent such cases and help keep children in class.
Beyond the distribution of materials, the event will include education sessions for pupils on menstrual hygiene, personal hygiene, and the importance of staying in school.
According to Mr.Bejamin Ofosu Owusu-Ansah he said. “This program is part of our broader effort to support rural schools that are already calling for assistance,” .
Mr. Owusu-Ansah said. “Together, we can ensure that no girl misses school because of menstruation and no child drops out because of lack of basic learning materials.”
Individuals, NGOs, and organizations interested in partnering to expand the initiative to other rural communities are invited to support the effort.
The launch at Agogo Offinso M/A Primary School marks the first rollout of the intervention, with plans to scale to additional communities across the municipality.
