KMA Warns Transport Operators Over Illegal Fare Hikes, Threatens Revocation of Permits.
Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly cautions station executives and drivers to desist from charging unapproved fares; deploys enforcement taskforce
KUMASI -The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has warned transport unions and commercial drivers in the metropolis to immediately stop charging unapproved transport fares, describing the practice as illegal and highly unacceptable.
In a press statement issued on Sunday, August 17, 2026, and signed by the Public Relations Unit, the Assembly said its attention has been drawn to the recent charging of illegal fares by some transport operators within the Kumasi Metropolis.
The Assembly cautioned transport unions, particularly station executives and drivers, to desist from the act with immediate effect.
“The attention of the Management of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has been drawn to the charging of illegal transport fares recently. This phenomenon is illegal and highly unacceptable,” the statement said.
According to the KMA, an enforcement taskforce will soon be deployed to visit various transport unions and lorry stations to ensure compliance with the law.
The Assembly further warned that transport executives risk having their operating permits revoked if found culpable.
“Transport executives should also take note that their transport operating permits with KMA shall be revoked immediately if they are found charging unapproved fares,” it stressed.
The KMA urged regional and branch transport executives to ensure that station officers and drivers, who it described as the worst culprits in charging unapproved fares, comply with the directive.
The Assembly directed that further enquiries regarding the directive should be made to Mr. Randy Wilson, Head of Transport Department of KMA on 0244540238.
The statement was addressed to all media houses for immediate publication.
