GRNMA-GAR Condemns Assault on Midwife at Community 22 Polyclinic, Vows Legal Action
Accra, Ghana – May 4, 2026 — The Greater Accra Regional branch of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives’ Association (GRNMA-GAR) has condemned the assault of a midwife by a patient’s relative at Community 22 Polyclinic, calling the incident “unfortunate and disgraceful to Ghana and its healthcare delivery.”
In an official statement released today, GRNMA-GAR expressed solidarity with the affected midwife and all nurses and midwives nationwide.
The Association said it will “go to the fullest extent to seek justice for the affected member.”
The Association outlined the following facts based on its preliminary findings:
1. The patient had undergone a C-section and was discharged on Post Op Day 3, awaiting bill settlement.
2. The incident occurred on Post Op Day 4 when a patient’s relative visited after official visiting hours.
3. The midwife, who was attending to other patients and administering medication, informed the relatives of visiting hours and called security to maintain order.
4. The relatives became angry that security was called. After security left for other wards, the verbal altercation continued.
5. The midwife left to file an incident report. She was then struck from behind by one of the women, while a male relative also became furious.
6. The argument escalated, resulting in the assault captured in a video now circulating online.
GRNMA-GAR stated that the midwife “restrained herself and did not even touch the gentleman,” yet some commentators are still blaming nurses and midwives.
The Association confirmed the matter has been reported to police and will proceed to court on Monday, May 5, 2026.
The midwife has been medically assessed and counselled. District and Regional GRNMA Executives have been in constant contact with her since the video surfaced yesterday.
GRNMA-GAR reminded the public and health authorities that staff safety is protected under Ghana’s Labour Act 2003, Act 651.
It cited Section 121: _“A worker may remove himself or herself from a work situation which he or she has reasonable justification to believe presents an imminent and serious danger to his or her life or health.”_
“We assure all members to continue acting professionally and to work within a safe and secure environment. Your health and safety also matter,” the statement added.
The Association concluded: “Long Live GRNMA. Long Live GRNMA-GAR. Long Live Nurses and Midwives.”
