Give armed robbers what they want during attacks to save your lives – IGP urges Ghanaians

Give armed robbers what they want during attacks to save your lives – IGP urges Ghanaians.

The Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has advised Ghanaians to avoid resisting armed robbers during attacks and instead prioritise their personal safety.

Speaking on Tuesday, May 19, during a presentation by the Mobile Money Advocacy Group Ghana, the IGP said victims should cooperate with criminals and surrender any valuables demanded in order to protect their lives.

The advocacy group honoured Mr Yohuno with a plaque and citation in recognition of his contribution to crime fighting and public security.

Addressing the gathering, the IGP stressed that no material possession is worth risking one’s life over during a robbery incident.

“All that we are saying is that to Ghanaians in general, if you are attacked by any criminal, whatever they want from you, just give it out to them. We don’t want anybody to struggle with any criminal when the person confronts you anywhere,” he stated.

He explained that items such as mobile phones, money, laptops, and even vehicles can be replaced, unlike human life.

“If it is your mobile phone he wants to take from you, let him take it. If it is your laptop he wants to take, let him take it. If it is your money he wants to take, your life is more precious than these petty-petty items,” he added.

Mr Yohuno further assured the public that the Ghana Police Service remains committed to tracking down and arresting criminals involved in violent crimes.

According to him, victims should focus on staying safe while security agencies pursue offenders after the incident.

“If you are driving your car and the criminal says he wants it, give it out to him. Let him know that he can take these things but he cannot hide. Security will come after that person,” he said.

The IGP reiterated the Police Service’s commitment to investigating unresolved criminal cases and ensuring perpetrators are brought to justice, emphasising that the protection of lives remains the top priority of the service.
