Bawumia Urges Immediate Accountability for NDC Promises, Says “We Cannot Wait Until 2028”
Accra – Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has called for sustained public pressure on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, arguing that Ghanaians should not delay in demanding accountability for campaign pledges made during the 2024 elections.
Speaking on the need for active civic engagement, Dr. Bawumia said accountability must be an ongoing process, not one deferred to the next election cycle.
“Through questions, statements and motions, we must consistently hold the NDC accountable for the promises and claims they made to Ghanaians,” he stated. “We cannot wait until 2028.”
The former NPP flagbearer emphasized that opposition parties, civil society, and the public have a role in scrutinizing government performance on commitments related to the economy, cost of living, jobs, and public services.
He argued that early and consistent oversight helps ensure that campaign commitments translate into policy delivery.
Dr. Bawumia’s remarks come as the NDC administration, led by President John Dramani Mahama, marks its first months in office following its return to power in January 2025.
Since taking office, the government has outlined a number of policy priorities, including economic stabilization, job creation, and social interventions.
Political analysts note that calls for early accountability are a common feature of Ghana’s competitive two-party system, where opposition figures typically track and comment on the fulfillment of manifesto promises from the outset of a new administration.
The NDC has previously stated that it is working to implement its 120-day social contract and broader manifesto commitments, citing ongoing consultations and budgetary processes as part of the rollout.
Dr. Bawumia concluded that maintaining public focus on pre-election pledges is essential for strengthening democratic responsiveness in Ghana.
