ECG to implement scheduled outages in Kumasi Ridge during transformer upgrade.

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced plans to upgrade a key transformer at the Kumasi Ridge Substation to enhance power supply and improve service reliability in the area.

The exercise is scheduled to take place from Wednesday, May 6, to Saturday, May 9, 2026, and forms part of the government’s ongoing Transformer Replacement and Upgrade Programme aimed at strengthening electricity infrastructure and easing pressure on the distribution network.

As part of the project, ECG will replace an existing 20/26MVA transformer with a higher-capacity 30/39MVA unit at the substation.

The company says the upgrade will boost supply capacity, improve voltage stability, and reduce system overloads and equipment failures.

ECG noted that similar upgrades have already been completed at the Adenta, Nmai Dzorm, Lashibi, and Teshie-Nungua primary substations.

To ensure the safe execution of the works, customers within the Kumasi Ridge catchment area will experience phased power outages over the four-day period. Each group of affected customers is expected to be without electricity for approximately six hours, depending on the work schedule.

The company acknowledged the inconvenience the interruptions may cause but emphasised that the upgrade is necessary to deliver long-term improvements in power supply
