Court Hands Lengthy Jail Terms to Three for Armed Robbery

The Nsuta Circuit Court in the Sekyere Central District of the Ashanti Region, presided over by His Lordship Simon Nketiah, on Thursday, April 30, 2026, sentenced three individuals to lengthy terms of imprisonment after they pleaded guilty for robbery charges .

Kofi Adu, alias K2, a 33-year-old Uber driver identified as the ringleader, was sentenced to 50 years’ imprisonment. The court noted that he had earlier been convicted and sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment on the same day by the same court for a similar offence, leading to an enhanced sentence.

Akwasi Agyei, alias Show Boy, aged 22 and unemployed, received a 20-year prison term as a first-time offender.

Owusu Patrick, alias Ike, aged 21, also unemployed, was sentenced to 40 years’ imprisonment, having previously been handed a 20-year sentence by the same court on the same day for a related offence.

The convicts are residents of Asotwe, Nkwakwannua, and Donaso respectively.

Presenting the case, Chief Inspector Owusu Kobi Moses told the court that the complainant, Nana Serwaa, a 48-year-old fetish priestess at Baamang near Bonwire, was attacked in her shrine under violent circumstances.

According to the prosecution, on December 28, 2025, at about 7:20 p.m., the complainant was in the shrine with her 13-year-old grandson, Emmanuel Oppong Danso, and a five-year-old girl, Maafia, when Kofi Adu entered and claimed he was searching for his sick sister, allegedly receiving herbal treatment there. The complainant denied any knowledge of such a patient.

The court heard that Kofi Adu , angered by the response, summoned his accomplices. The group stormed the shrine armed with machetes, with one wielding a pistol.

They subjected the complainant to physical assault and forced her to open a room where her “smaller gods” were kept.

The attackers ransacked the room and made away with GH¢7,600.00 in cash. Not satisfied, kofi Adu seized the complainant’s mobile phone and compelled her, under threat, to disclose her mobile money (MoMo) PIN. Out of fear, she complied, enabling the transfer of GH¢1,200.00 to an undisclosed number.

The robbers subsequently warned the complainant against reporting the incident and fled the scene. However, she reported the matter to the Baamang Police, who initiated investigations but were initially unable to locate the suspects.

The prosecution further stated that between April 24 and April 27, 2026, a Police NOD Surveillance Team conducted a special operation across Asotwe, Donaso, Onwe Nkwanta, and surrounding communities. The operation led to the arrest of Kofi Adu on April 29, 2026, at about 11:55 a.m.

A search of his residence revealed machetes, a vehicle number plate GN 886-19, and assorted mobile phones. He subsequently assisted the police in apprehending the other accused persons from their hideouts.

Efforts are ongoing to arrest another suspect, identified as Edem Ayigbe, who remains at large.

The court further ordered the prosecution to release the retrieved mobile phone to its rightful owner.
