Logeist Group Limited and government set to reclaim 2000 abandoned galamsey pits in Amansie Central

 

Depleted land from illegal mining known as galamsey in Ghana refers to significant areas of land, including large hectares of forest and agricultural land, that have been devastated, degraded, and rendered unproductive by the process.

This environmental destruction, characterized by deforestation, soil erosion, and water pollution from chemicals like mercury, poses a national security and economic crisis, threatening Ghana’s biodiversity, water supply, and agricultural productivity, particularly its vital cocoa sector.

With this the Logeist Group Limited in partnership with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Environmental Protection Agency, Soil Research Institute and the Concerned Miners Association are set to reclaim 2000 hectares of degraded lands in the Amansie Central of the Ashanti Region.

The leaders of Logeist Group Limited, said they aimed to address the severe environmental damage caused by illegal mining.

The primary method involves planting economic trees such Carbon trees and phytoremediation plants, creating new income sources for local communities.

The project emphasizes community engagement and collaboration with the government, traditional leaders, and environmental experts to ensure long-term success and protection of the reclaimed lands.

More than 1,500 youths will recruited to help reduce unemployment in the country. They said,

This was made this known when the Logeist Group Limited presented Zonda GWM pickup vehicle to the Ashanti regional south police command at Bekwai.

The Assistant Ashanti regional south police commander ACP Sefas Arthur said this vehicle will help their daily operations in the area.

The vehicle, which was locally assembled by Zonda GWM, will help equip the police force dedicated to protecting lives and properties.He emphasised;

Initial efforts have focused on heavily degraded areas in the Ashanti region, with plans to expand the program across the country.
