Akyem Quarshie Korowura Accuses Asamankese Elders of Illegal Enstoolment, Police Intimidation.
The Korowura of Akyem Quarshie, Mr. J.B. Quarshie Rockson, has raised concerns over what he describes as an attempt by some elders from Asamankese to interfere in the traditional affairs of Akyem Quarshie, as well as alleged intimidation and unprofessional conduct by some police officers.
Speaking at a press conference held at the funeral grounds in Akyem Quarshie on Sunday, August 30, 2026, Mr. Quarshie Rockson maintained that the community forms part of the Quarshie Estates and was legally acquired by the Quarshie family in 1916, with relevant documentation dating back to 1922.
According to him, the traditional authority to enstool a chief for Akyem Quarshie rests with the Quarshie family. He therefore described the recent enstoolment of one Kofi Badu as chief by some elders from Asamankese as illegal, null and void.
He called on all stakeholders to disregard the said enstoolment and urged traditional authorities, government and other relevant institutions to intervene to prevent further escalation of the matter.
Mr. Quarshie Rockson also appealed to the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Tetteh Yohuno, to urgently look into a petition concerning what he described as unprofessional conduct by some officers at the Asamankese Police Station and the National Police Headquarters.
He alleged that the conduct of some officers had been biased and was contributing to tensions within the community. He stressed that residents of Akyem Quarshie were law-abiding and would not resort to violence, but needed an urgent and amicable resolution to the situation.
“The Asamankese Police have not been fair to me. I was slashed with a machete at the throat, and when the matter was reported, a Chief Inspector allegedly called the accused to flee before officers arrived at the scene to make an arrest. Secondly, I was recently arrested to the National Police Headquarters for no wrongdoing,” Mr. Quarshie Rockson alleged.
Hajia Mariam Mohammed, Development Queen of Akyem Quarshie, who represented the family head, Dr. Elizabeth Bannerman, confirmed the concerns raised and described the situation as worrying.
She appealed to the government, traditional authorities and opinion leaders to intervene to ensure an amicable resolution of the dispute.
Hajia Mariam also expressed concern over reports that the name of President John Dramani Mahama was being dragged into the matter by some individuals.
She condemned the development and called on all parties to desist from actions that could further heighten tensions.
She urged the people of Akyem Quarshie to remain united and focus on the development of the community and the country.
The press conference was attended by traditional elders and more than 500 residents of Akyem Quarshie.
