Akyem Dokyie Community Calls for Termination of Elite Minerals Company’s Contract

The Akyem Dokyie community in the Kwaebibirem District of the Eastern Region has called on the government to terminate the contract of Elite Minerals Company, citing alleged environmental destruction and failure to fulfill key commitments to the community.

The call follows the community’s decision to terminate its agreement with the mining company, signed on June 13, 2024, over alleged breaches of the terms of the agreement.

According to the community, the company has failed to deliver on some of its commitments, including the provision of electricity and reclamation of the community park.

Residents have also raised concerns about the alleged destruction of water bodies through mining activities. They further claim that excavation activities have extended to the community cemetery, creating potential health, environmental and sanitation risks.

In interviews conducted by Oyerepa TV/FM Correspondent George Botha, some community members expressed their disappointment with the mining company and appealed to the government and relevant authorities to intervene.

They are urging the government to take immediate action to protect their water bodies, cemetery and the wider environment, and to terminate the company’s contract if the allegations are established.
