Ofankor-Barrier Crash: 12 Dead, Several Injured in 7-Vehicle Collision; NRSA Calls for Safer Road Use.

Accra –The National Road Safety Authority, NRSA, has expressed deep sorrow following a devastating road crash that claimed twelve lives along the John Teye-Ofankor corridor on Thursday, August 13, 2026.

According to a statement issued for immediate release on Wednesday, the crash involved seven vehicles, including two heavily loaded tipper trucks, two passenger sprinter buses, two private saloon cars and one tricycle. Several other persons sustained injuries.

The Authority extended its condolences to the bereaved families and transport associations affected, and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

The victims have been conveyed to the Ga North Municipal Hospital and Achimota Hospital for urgent medical care.

The NRSA said it is working in collaboration with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department, MTTD, of the Ghana Police Service and other stakeholders to manage traffic and restore order along the corridor.

Describing the incident as a painful reminder of the need for greater responsibility on the roads, the Authority said it is concerned about the rising trend of fatal crashes across the country.

It reminded motorists of statutory speed limits:90 km/h on highways, 50 km/h in urban settlements, and 30 km/h in built-up areas.

The Authority also urged vehicle owners and operators to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before setting off, noting that mechanical failures combined with excessive speeding remain major causes of crashes.

“Road safety is a shared responsibility,” the statement said, adding that the NRSA continues to work closely with transport unions, civil society organizations and the Ghana Police Service to reduce road traffic fatalities.

“The Ofankor-Barrier crash is a painful reminder of the consequences of negligence and non-compliance with road safety regulations,” the NRSA stated.

“Together, through vigilance, discipline, and collective responsibility, we can prevent such tragedies.”
