Rise above fearing critics, turn challenges into success – Sunyani West MP tells students
The Member of Parliament for Sunyani West, Hon. Millicent Yeboah Amankwah, has urged students to confront life with determination and stop relying excessively on parental support or excuses.
Speaking to a group of law students who visited her in Parliament, the lawmaker said resilience, discipline, and personal responsibility are the real drivers of success, not perfect circumstances.
Addressing the students with candor, Hon. Amankwah shared personal experiences from her own journey to inspire them. She recounted the obstacles she overcame to reach Parliament, emphasizing that setbacks should be treated as lessons rather than reasons to give up.
“Your background is not your destiny. What you do with your challenges will define your future,” she told the students.
The Sunyani West MP criticized a growing trend among young people who blame the absence of parental guidance for their failures.
She said while parental support is important, many successful Ghanaians have risen above difficult home situations through hard work and focus.
Hon. Amankwah urged the students to stop using excuses and instead use every difficulty as fuel to pursue their ambitions.
She challenged them to adopt a mindset of self-reliance and seriousness about their education and career paths.
According to her, a positive attitude combined with consistent effort can help anyone build a fulfilling life regardless of their starting point.
“You can forge a successful future through dedication and the right mindset, even if life does not hand you everything,” she emphasized.
Hon. Amankwah also turned her advice to technology, urging students to use the internet productively.
She cautioned against spending too much time on frivolous online activities that add no value. Instead, she encouraged them to explore digital skills, freelancing, content creation, and online businesses as ways to generate income while still in school.
The MP stressed that the internet is no longer just a tool for entertainment but a marketplace and classroom.
She said students who learn to harness it for financial advancement and personal growth will be ahead of their peers after graduation.
“Your phone can be a source of income if you use it wisely,” she added, advising them to invest time in skills that pay.
Concluding her engagement, Hon. Millicent Yeboah Amankwah encouraged the law students to face critics and naysayers without fear.
She said every successful person faces criticism, but those who stay focused on their goals eventually silence the noise.
She pledged to continue mentoring young people in Sunyani West and urged them to believe in their ability to shape their own destiny.
