River ‘Vanishes’ in Offinso Koforidua Following Power Outage and Water Shortage

OFFINSO KOFORIDUA, Ashanti Region, Residents of Offinso Koforidua in the Offinso South Municipality are raising alarm after a river that has served the area for many years reportedly dried up following days of power outage and water shortage.

According to the Assembly Member for the area, Issaka Ibrahim, the situation began after an accident at Sakamkrom which caused a power outage in communities along that electricity line.

“Because of the power outage, there was a shortage of electricity to supply water,” Hon. Ibrahim explained.

“A river which has been in the community for many years, even in the dry season there is access to water, has vanished from the community. When some commuters went to fetch water from the river, there wasn’t a drop.”

The Assembly Member said he had been trying to reach the traditional leaders in the area to get clarity on the matter but had been unsuccessful.

Hon. Ibrahim further stated that some youth in the community approached him to say that elders had summoned them for alerting the media about the issue without the knowledge of the Nananom.

“Because I haven’t heard anything from the traditional leaders, I assume those are allegations,” he said.

Residents say the sudden disappearance of the river has worsened their water challenges, as many households in Offinso Koforidua depend on it for domestic use, especially during outages.

Efforts to get a response from the traditional council were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
