Journalism Requires Sacrifice, Commitment and Excellence – GJA President Albert Dwumfour
The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has reminded journalists that journalism is a calling and not merely a profession.
He said the profession demands sacrifice, commitment, specialized knowledge and continuous professional development if practitioners are to make meaningful impact on society.
Mr. Dwumfour stated this at the Ghana Media Soirée 2026 organized by the Ghana National Gas Company Limited (Ghana Gas) to engage media practitioners and enhance their understanding of the company’s operations in gas, energy, health, safety and environmental sustainability.
According to him, although he was indisposed, he had to attend the program because of his longstanding relationship with Ghana Gas and his belief that journalism thrives on sacrifice.
“This is why journalism is a calling, not merely a profession. It comes with sacrifices,” he emphasized.
He said journalists must move beyond routine reporting and strive to produce innovative and impactful stories that contribute to national development, adding that it is for this reason that outstanding works are recognized through awards.
The GJA President lauded Ghana Gas for investing in capacity building for journalists, noting that such initiatives are critical to strengthening media practice in today’s digital and information-driven world.
He added that continuous professional development remains a key objective of the GJA and is consistent with the constitutional mandate of the media in Ghana.
