SSNIT Embarks on Float in Techiman to Create Awareness on Pension Contributions

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has embarked on a float through the principal streets of Techiman in the Bono East Region as part of activities to herald its Mobile Service Week launch on Monday.

The exercise, led by the Sunyani Area Manager of SSNIT, Mr. Alex Appiah, was aimed at creating massive public awareness on the need for every worker to contribute towards their future pension security.

Speaking during the float, Mr. Appiah said many Ghanaians still do not understand the enormous benefits SSNIT offers, noting that contributors enjoy peace of mind and financial relief on retirement with a guaranteed regular monthly income.

He stressed that SSNIT remains the only scheme in Ghana that provides comprehensive social protection including Old Age Pension, Invalidity Pension for contributors who can no longer work due to ill health, and Survivors’ Lump Sum for dependents of deceased contributors.

Mr. Appiah also dispelled the misconception that SSNIT is only for government workers or monthly salary earners. He explained that the scheme is open to all workers, including self-employed persons such as carpenters, masons, farmers, hairdressers, tailors, dressmakers, market women, drivers and other informal sector operators.

He encouraged informal sector workers to enrol onto the scheme to secure their future and that of their families.

On innovations, Mr. Appiah disclosed that SSNIT has introduced digital payment platforms to make contribution payments easy and convenient, allowing contributors to pay via mobile money and other electronic channels without visiting SSNIT offices.

He urged both existing contributors and new members to take advantage of the platforms to ensure their contributions are regular and up to date.

The SSNIT Mobile Service Week is expected to bring SSNIT services directly to the doorstep of contributors and potential contributors, especially those in the informal sector.
