Greater Accra Minister Unveils 2026 Rainy Season Preparedness Plan

Greater Accra Regional Minister Hon Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo has announced a region-wide emergency response plan ahead of the 2026 rainy season, warning that more heavy rains are expected following recent weather advisories from the Ghana Meteorological Agency.

Addressing a press conference, Ocloo said the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council, in collaboration with NADMO, MMDAs, security agencies, and other stakeholders, has intensified measures to prevent flooding and protect lives and property.

The onset of the rains has already resulted in unfortunate incidents and casualties in some parts of the region,” she said. “It is against this backdrop that we have intensified efforts to prepare the region to respond swiftly to any emergency that may arise.

As part of the interventions, MMDAs have been directed to desilt drains and gutters, remove refuse and obstructions from drainage channels, inspect waterways, and demolish unauthorized structures blocking the free flow of water. Public education campaigns are also being scaled up.

Flood-prone communities identified for close monitoring include Kaneshie, Alajo, Odawna, Circle, Weija, Teshie-Nungua, Ashalaja, Dansoman, Adabraka, Ashaiman, Tema Communities 1 and 2, Madina, East Legon, Lakeside, Boatemaa, Pantang, and Pokuase.

Emergency response teams at regional and district levels have been activated and are working with the Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Police Service, Ghana Armed Forces, and National Ambulance Service to ensure rapid response.

Relief items including food supplies, mattresses, blankets, first aid kits, and life jackets have been pre-positioned at strategic locations. Safe havens and temporary shelters have also been identified in selected schools, community centers, assembly halls, religious institutions, and government facilities on safer ground.
