Local leaders say early education, support for recovery, and youth programs are key to reducing substance abuse

Abofoman Community has launched a public awareness campaign aimed at curbing drug abuse and protecting young people, calling on residents to take an active role in prevention and recovery efforts.

Community organizers say drug abuse continues to affect families and neighborhoods by straining health systems, disrupting education, and contributing to crime. The new initiative seeks to address the issue through open dialogue, support services, and expanded opportunities for youth.

“Prevention works best when it starts early and involves the whole community,” a campaign statement said. “Our focus is on giving young people accurate information, making sure families know where to get help, and creating alternatives that make staying drug-free a realistic choice.”

The campaign outlines three main approaches: early conversations with youth about the risks of substance use, treating addiction as a public health issue to reduce stigma, and providing programs like sports, skills training, and mentorship to give young people positive pathways.

Organizers emphasized that the effort depends on participation beyond local officials. Parents, teachers, religious leaders, and residents are all being asked to support the initiative in their homes and neighborhoods.

The group says it will share updates and invite other communities to adopt similar models. Residents are encouraged to share what their own communities are doing to address drug abuse.
