“Minister for Ashanti Region Urges Calm: Stop Attacking Police”

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has called on residents to refrain from attacking police officers on duty and instead cooperate fully to help maintain law and ensure a peaceful environment for all.

His appeal follows a confrontation on January 23, 2026, between suspected illegal miners and police officers carrying out routine duties at Bepotenten, near Jacobu in the Amansie Central District.

The clash left one person dead and several others injured, raising public concern over efforts to combat illegal mining in the region.

Describing the incident as regrettable and preventable, Dr. Amoakohene urged citizens to comply with lawful directives, emphasizing that under no circumstances should anyone confront the police or engage in actions that threaten public safety.

He extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and expressed sympathy to all affected by the tragic event

The minister also commended the Ghana Police Service for its commitment to maintaining law and order and reiterated the government’s pledge to support the police and other security agencies in executing their duties to protect lives, property, and public peace.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and those found to have acted unlawfully will be held accountable, Dr. Amoakohene stated. He also urged community leaders and stakeholders to work together to restore calm and order in the affected areas.
