Kumasi Road Safety Study Reveals Alarming Trends: SUVs, Saloon Cars, and Pickups Top Deadliest Vehicles Lisst.
A recent road safety study has identified SUVs, saloon cars, and pickup trucks as the deadliest vehicles on Kumasi’s streets. The study, conducted by Johns Hopkins University in collaboration with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, analyzed road safety data from the Kumasi BIGRS Office and found that these vehicle types were responsible for over half of pedestrian fatalities between 2022 and 2024.

The findings showed that out of 180 pedestrian deaths, 98 were attributed to SUVs, saloon cars, and pickups, representing 51% of the total fatalities. Other vehicle types, such as buses, minibuses, heavy goods vehicles, and two- and three-wheelers, also contributed to pedestrian deaths, but to a lesser extent.

The study also revealed that most fatal accidents occurred on weekends and at night, highlighting concerns about driving behavior and enforcement during these periods.

Stakeholders, including law enforcement, driving school owners, and road engineers, have been urged to collaborate more effectively to address the road safety crisis. Ing. Francis Afukaar, Chief Research Scientist at CSIR-BRRI, emphasized the need for increased enforcement of road safety regulations, while Dr. James Kumwenda, Global Program Manager at the Johns Hopkins International Injury Research Unit, advocated for a “total system approach” to reducing road traffic fatalities in Kumasi.
