Speaker Bagbin Assures Legislation To Improve Conditions Of Service For Ghanaian Journalists
The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has assured that Parliament will soon initiate processes to enact a law that will ensure better conditions of service for media practitioners in the country.
According to him, journalism as a profession plays a critical role in national development and should not be left to grapple with the numerous challenges that confront practitioners in the discharge of their duties.
Mr. Bagbin explained that journalists, who expose wrongdoing in society, must not be left in a vulnerable state where they depend on the very people they are supposed to hold accountable.
He said the proposed legislation would establish basic standards for conditions of service to ensure that media practitioners are well catered for.
The Speaker gave the assurance when the President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr. Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, and his executives paid a courtesy call on him.
The visit was to officially invite the Speaker to the GJA’s 30th Anniversary Awards ceremony and to appeal for Parliament’s support in enacting a law that would protect journalists and guarantee improved conditions of service for Ghanaian media practitioners.
