Tragedy At The Altar: Ecuadorian Priest Dies After Crucifix Falls On Him During Live Mass

A cloud of shock and grief has enveloped the Catholic Church in Ecuador following the tragic death of Rev. Fr. Patricio Alfredo Sanchez Mo, who died after a large crucifix fell on him while celebrating Mass.

Fr. Molinari, 53, was the parish priest of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Perpetuo Socorro, in Guayaquil. The Archdiocese of Guayaquil confirmed that the accident happened on Saturday, October 17, during a Mass that was being livestreamed on the parish’s social media page.

Reports indicate that about 27 minutes into the Mass, a heavy wooden crucifix fixed on the wall behind the altar detached and struck the priest from behind. Parishioners rushed to the altar as cries for an ambulance were heard on the livestream.

He was pronounced dead the same day.

Cardinal Luis Gerardo Cabrera, Archbishop of Guayaquil, in a statement said, “Our dear Fr. Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, who served as parish priest of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in the Central Vicariate, has departed to the Father’s House to enjoy His presence and His glory.”

The tragedy has been made even more painful by what turned out to be his final homily. Just minutes before the accident, Fr. Molinari was reflecting on the fleeting nature of life.

“One day, all of us here will also die,” he told worshippers, urging them to spend more time with God and family.

The priest, a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorists), had served in various parishes including San Lorenzo Parish in Vinces, Los Rios Province. His death came just a day after the Archdiocese had celebrated his ordination anniversary.

His passing is a test of faith and a stark reminder of how fragile and unpredictable life is.

Beyond debates, Fr. Molinari deserves honour for his vocation, his service to the Church, and respect for the grief of his family and parishioners.

While some on social media have used the incident to mock the Catholic faith and question the use of sacred images, many faithful have called for prayers and restraint.

May his death remind us all to cherish every day we have.
