No More Dumsor During Shutdowns — Ghana Gas CEO Reveals Plan To Procure Third Compressor

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana National Gas Company Limited (Ghana Gas), Judith Adjobah Blay, has announced that the company is at the final stage of procuring a third gas compressor to end power outages during plant shutdowns.

She made the announcement during a media soiree at the Alisa Hotel in Accra over the weekend.

According to Ms. Blay, the new compressor, with a capacity of about 220 million standard cubic feet of gas, will increase the company’s gas handling capacity and introduce much-needed redundancy into its operations.

She explained that the intervention will eliminate the dumsor that Ghanaians experience whenever the Atuabo plant is shut down for maintenance works.

“What it is going to do is that once in the next 18 months or so we build that compressor, it means that when we shut down the plant now, or the compressor that is existing now to repair it, there will be no power outages,” she assured.

Ms. Blay stressed that operational efficiency is non-negotiable for Ghana Gas, as its core mandate is to support power generation in the country.

“The bottom line to what we do is that we contribute to electricity production, and therefore, if we don’t create the necessary operational efficiency, it will affect the bottom line, which is making sure that we have our lights on,” she noted.

She said with redundancy, the company can switch to an alternative facility during maintenance without a total shutdown, ensuring continuous gas supply to power producers.

“We are almost at the end of the procurement of a third compressor… very soon within the month you are going to hear us say Ghana Gas has executed an agreement to procure a third compressor,” Ms. Blay added.

She further revealed that Ghana Gas currently operates about 400 kilometres of pipeline network, including an offshore pipeline that transports gas from offshore fields to its Atuabo processing plant for onward transmission to power producers.
