Rev Fr Adu-Poku Warns Mahama: Ghana Not Going In Right Direction; Galamsey Has Worsened Under You
KUMASI -A Catholic Priest of the Archdiocese of Kumasi, Rev.Fr.Cecelia Adu-Poku, has warned President John Dramani Mahama that Ghana is “not going the right direction” and urged him to listen to people who will tell him the truth.
Rev Fr Adu-Poku gave the warning during a church service on Sunday, where he criticised the government’s handling of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
The priest said the galamsey menace has worsened under President Mahama’s administration, despite the President’s pledge to tackle it within his first 100 days in office.
“Respectfully give listening ear to people who will tell you the truth. This nation in all indication is not going the right direction,” he said.
“You promised to stop Galamsey within your first 100 days, we’ve gone beyond that… Galamsey has worsened under your tenure,” Rev Fr Adu-Poku added.
Rev Fr Adu-Poku also decried what he described as growing intolerance for dissent, alleging that citizens who openly raise concerns about the government are insulted or targeted on social media.
He urged the President to pay attention to what he called “discerning voices” and to take decisions that serve the national interest.
The priest further raised concerns about what he described as attempts by some unidentified actors to influence the direction of the country from behind the scenes.
“Some of us have prayed. And we know people who are working behind the scenes to turn this nation over,” he said, without identifying the individuals or groups he was referring to.
“Make a name or disgrace yourself”
Addressing President Mahama directly, Rev Fr Adu-Poku said the President has only a few years left in office and should use the remaining period to build a positive legacy.
“You have a few years to leave the scene. It is either you allow God to make a name with you or disgrace yourself before you leave the scene,” he stated.
“On our part we are going to pray for you because God has chosen us to do that,” the priest added.
The Presidency is yet to respond to the comments.
