Abofour Thursday Market Struggles with Single Waste Container Despite Top Revenue Status.
Offinso South, Ashanti Region-The Abofour Thursday Market, recognized as the Offinso South Municipality’s highest weekly revenue generator and the 3rd largest market in the Ashanti Region, is operating with only one repaired old waste container from Zoomlion Ghana Limited to manage sanitation for thousands of traders and patrons.
Market days draw traders from across Ashanti and neighboring regions, generating significant revenue for the municipality.
Despite its economic importance, vendors and patrons say the current waste management setup is inadequate for the volume of refuse produced each week.
According to traders at the market, the single container is often overwhelmed before midday, leading to waste spilling onto walkways and trading areas.
The container itself is a repaired unit, raising concerns about its capacity and durability under heavy use.
“We pay market tolls every week, and Abofour Market brings a lot of money to the Assembly, but when it comes to sanitation, we are left with one old container,” said one trader who has sold at the market for over 10 years.
“On market days, the place gets dirty quickly, and it affects both health and sales.”
Sanitation experts note that large, high-traffic markets require multiple strategically placed waste containers and regular evacuation schedules to prevent public health risks.
The current situation at Abofour raises questions about how revenue generated from the market is being reinvested into basic infrastructure.
The matter has been brought to the attention of the Ashanti Regional Co-ordinating Council and the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
Traders and residents are appealing for urgent intervention to provide additional waste containers and a consistent waste evacuation plan that matches the market’s scale and economic contribution.
Improving sanitation infrastructure at Abofour Thursday Market would not only protect public health but also preserve the market’s reputation as a key commercial hub in the Ashanti Region and beyond.
