URGENT CALL TO GOVERNMENT: PAY CHIEFS’ ALLOWANCES NOW
The Chairman of the Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs Committee, Dr. Fred Kyei Asamoah, has appealed to the government to immediately settle the outstanding 3rd and 4th quarter allowances of Chiefs.
Dr. Kyei emphasized the crucial role Chiefs play in Ghana’s tradition and stressed that they deserve support to effectively carry out their duties.
He cited the alarming number of chieftaincy disputes, attributing two-thirds to three-quarters of over 400 hotspots to inadequate resources.
Local Government Minister, Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim, echoed these sentiments, blaming politicians for weakening the Chieftaincy institution by stripping their powers, leaving them underresourced.
He urged the state to provide necessary resources, emphasizing the importance of empowering Chiefs to support governance.
Mr. Ibrahim praised the Speaker’s decision to appoint the committee chairman from the opposition, ensuring accountability and firm advocacy for the Chieftaincy institution’s needs.
The committee’s meeting aimed to strategize support for Chiefs, women’s empowerment, and promoting Ghana’s cultural heritage.
