Newborn Baby Girl Found at Refuse Dump in Awisem, Offinso South

OFFINSO, Ashanti Region,A newborn baby girl was found abandoned at a refuse dump in Awisem in the Offinso South Municipality in the early hours of Tuesday.

According to the Assembly Member for the area, Hon. Iddrisu Issaka, he received an emergency call from the Awisem Odikro around 5:00 a.m. to come to the community.

“When I got there, the Odikro told me a woman had come to report that she found a newly born female baby at the refuse dump and came to make a report,” Hon. Issaka said.

With the help of the Assembly Member, the Odikro and elders of the community, the baby was taken from the dump site and handed over to an elderly woman in the community. She bathed the baby and provided initial care.

The matter was subsequently reported to the Offinso Police Command. Officers responded and conveyed the baby to St. Patrick’s Hospital for medical attention and further care.

Police have since commenced investigations to trace the mother or persons responsible for abandoning the child.

Community leaders have appealed to residents with any information about the incident to volunteer it to the police to aid investigations.

Hospital authorities say the baby is currently receiving treatment and is responding well.

The incident has sparked discussions in Awisem and surrounding communities about child protection and support systems for vulnerable mothers.
