TikToker Camilla Alhassan Jailed 1 Year Over False Claims Against President Mahama

TikToker Camilla Alhassan has been sentenced to one (1) year in prison by the Accra Circuit Court after pleading guilty to charges of offensive conduct and publication of false news.

The court handed down the sentence on Tuesday, following the conclusion of proceedings that had been deferred for a pregnancy test.

Alhassan was arrested after a series of videos she shared on TikTok went viral. In the videos, she alleged without providing any evidence that President John Dramani Mahama buried 32 cows as part of rituals to secure victory in the 2024 general elections.

The claims, which were widely circulated on social media, attracted significant public attention and condemnation, prompting police action.

During her earlier appearance before the court, Alhassan pleaded guilty to the charges.

The presiding judge accepted her guilty plea but deferred sentencing and ordered that a pregnancy test be conducted on her, in accordance with standard procedure before delivering final judgment in cases involving female convicts.

Following the completion of that process, the court reconvened and sentenced her to 12 months imprisonment.

The Ghana Police Service has reiterated its warning to content creators and social media users to desist from publishing false information and offensive conduct that could breach public peace.

The Service says it will continue to clamp down on abusive, threatening, and unlawful content shared online.

Alhassan is expected to begin serving her sentence immediately.
