Students are becoming more stubborn these days – Fiifi Boafo

Former COCOBOD Public Affairs Head Fiifi Boafo believes changing attitudes among students are making life more difficult for teachers, but says that reality does not justify physical confrontations.

Speaking on Joy News, he acknowledged growing concerns about student behaviour in schools, noting that some pupils openly challenge authority in ways that were uncommon years ago.

“Children are attacking their teachers, abusing them and all that,” he said.

Boafo argued that disciplinary systems have changed significantly over the years, leaving teachers with fewer options than previous generations enjoyed.

“The punishment regime in schools is not what it used to be,” he noted.

Despite those challenges, he stressed that educators must exercise restraint and professionalism at all times.

“It should not and must not get to this level where you see a teacher fighting a student.”

According to him, teachers are expected to maintain standards even when faced with difficult situations.

His comments follow the arrest of a Nyinahin Catholic SHS teacher after a viral video showed him physically assaulting a female student during a confrontation at the school’s hostel.

For Boafo, the incident highlights two separate problems, declining respect for authority among some students and the failure of some adults to manage conflicts appropriately.

“Immediate investigations are needed and sanctions must apply,” he said, insisting that schools must protect discipline without allowing disputes to escalate into violence.
