Personnel and residents call for urgent relocation as barracks become uninhabitable

AKYEM APERADE, Eastern Region — The Akyem Aperade Police Station and barracks in the Achiase District of the Eastern Region have been submerged by floodwaters following a torrential downpour yesterday, worsening an already dire situation at the facility.

Eyewitness accounts say the heavy rainfall overwhelmed drainage in the area, leaving offices, cells, and residential quarters of the police barracks underwater.

Personnel on duty were forced to salvage files, equipment, and personal belongings as water levels rose rapidly through the night.

The flooding has moved “from bad to worse” according to residents, who say this is not the first time the station has been hit, but yesterday’s downpour caused the most extensive damage yet.

Both police personnel working at the station and residents of Akyem Aperade are now appealing directly to the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, and government authorities to intervene urgently.

Their key demand: relocate the police station/barracks to higher, flood-free grounds to prevent future disasters and protect officers and detainees.

“Working here when it rains is a nightmare. We cannot continue to risk our lives and lose government property every rainy season,” a source at the station told reporters.

The Achiase District Assembly is yet to comment on the extent of damage or relief measures for affected officers.

Relocation of flood-prone public facilities has been a recurring issue across the Eastern Region during peak rainy seasons.
