Cybersecurity Expert Leads Dredging Effort to End Years of Flooding at Atonsu Kuwait
Residents of Atonsu Kuwait in the Asokwa Municipal are expressing renewed hope following the commencement of dredging works on the Atonsu and Sisa rivers, a move aimed at addressing years of devastating floods in the community.
For close to eight years, residents have endured recurring floods whenever heavy rains hit Kumasi and its surrounding areas, leaving homes submerged and properties destroyed.
Many residents attribute the situation to the frequent overflow of the Atonsu and Sisa rivers during rainfall, while others blame the indiscriminate dumping of refuse into the waterways, which obstructs the smooth flow of water and worsens flooding.
The ongoing dredging exercise is being spearheaded by cybersecurity expert and philanthropist, Kwame Adomako Samuel, who says the intervention is intended to restore the rivers’ capacity and reduce the threat posed to residents.
Speaking during the exercise, Mr. Samuel noted that flooding has become a major concern for the community and called for collective efforts to tackle the challenge before it results in fatalities.
He appealed to individuals, businesses and other well-meaning stakeholders to support initiatives aimed at protecting vulnerable communities from natural disasters.
According to him, preventing floods requires not only infrastructural interventions but also responsible environmental practices by residents.
Mr. Samuel further urged community members to refrain from dumping refuse into drains and rivers, stressing that proper sanitation remains a critical component in the fight against flooding.
Residents and local leaders who spoke to the media welcomed the intervention and expressed optimism that the dredging works would significantly reduce the flooding situation that has troubled the area for years.
They also called for sustained maintenance of the rivers and stricter enforcement of sanitation regulations to ensure a lasting solution to the problem.
