Kyeremasu Plunged Into Darkness for a Week Over Faulty Transformer, Residents Call for Urgent Action
Residents of the Atanofi (AF) Electoral Area in Kyeremasu, a suburb of the Dormaa East District in the Bono Region, have been plunged into darkness for almost one week following a breakdown of an electricity transformer.
The affected residents are calling on the authorities to urgently address the situation and restore power to the area. According to the residents, businesses and other activities that require electricity to operate have been brought to a standstill due to the week-long power outage.
Cold-store operators, in particular, say they have suffered losses as their meat products are going bad, while other electricity users have also been rendered helpless.
They have therefore appealed to VRA-NEDCo and other relevant authorities to urgently attend to the problem and restore electricity to enable them to resume their business operations, stressing that the prolonged outage is causing serious damage to their businesses.
Responding to the concerns following an emergency meeting between the PURC and the Kyeremasu community, the Bono Regional PRO of the PURC, Madam Julian Antwi, said the Commission serves as an intermediary between power producers and consumers to ensure that no party in the electricity value chain is cheated.
Madam Julian Antwi, says the PURC will liaise with VRA-NEDCo to replace the faulty transformer, but only after illegal power interconnections in the area are disconnected stressing that VRA-NEDCo reported to the PURC about illegal interconnections at AF Electoral Area which have placed excessive load on the transformer, contributing to its damage.
She urge community leaders to work with the DCE to pursue official electricity extension projects for areas without power to stop the illegal interconnections.
