Atiwa West District Police Commander Begins Construction of Ultramodern Police Headquarters
The District Police Commander for Atiwa West, DSP Sheila Afoley Odal, has initiated the construction of an ultramodern District Police Headquarters at Akyem Kwabeng in the Eastern Region.
The project, being executed with support from the community, is aimed at improving police administration and enhancing security service delivery in the district.
The construction was officially launched with a sod-cutting ceremony held at Akyem Kwabeng.
Speaking at the ceremony, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Atiwa West, Hon. Amoh Johnson, commended DSP Odal for the bold initiative.
He used the occasion to outline some ongoing government projects in the district, including a bypass road linking Akyem Kwabeng to Bomaa, an ultramodern bus terminal estimated at GH¢2.5 million, and an eight-seater water closet toilet facility for the Akyem Kwabeng Presbyterian Basic School.
Hon. Johnson also announced that a sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of an Anglican Basic School block with ancillary facilities would be held later this month.
He further disclosed that the Cooperative and Responsible Mining initiative would be inaugurated on November 22, 2026, by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah.
Touching on security, the DCE urged the police to intensify the fight against illicit drug trade and abuse in the district. He called on the police command to provide quarterly reports on arrests and prosecutions of drug peddlers and users to strengthen collaboration and accountability.
He also lauded the former District Police Commander, Mr. Yeboah, for his efforts in improving police infrastructure, noting that DSP Odal is building on that legacy.
For her part, DSP Sheila Afoley Odal said the decision to construct a new headquarters became necessary due to the deplorable state of the existing police infrastructure and an abandoned police housing project which has been overtaken by weeds.
She explained that her administration has mobilised seed money with community support to commence the project.
DSP Odal issued a stern warning to individuals engaged in criminal activities, particularly illicit drug trade and consumption, to desist from such acts, stressing that the police have mapped out strategies to arrest and prosecute offenders.
The Tufohene of Akyem Gyaase, Baffour Osuodumgya, appealed to residents, corporate bodies and other stakeholders to support the project to ensure its successful completion.
The contractor for the project, Mr. Akanko Frank, assured that the edifice would be completed within six months if the needed materials are made available on time. P
