Bibiani Zongo Muslim Women Donate GH¢10,000 Worth of Food and Toiletries to Kumasi Central Prison

KUMASI -The Muslim Women Association of Bibiani Zongo has extended a hand of compassion to inmates of the Kumasi Central Prison with the donation of food supplies and toiletries valued at Ten Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢10,000).

The items, which included bags of rice, cooking oil, soap, detergents and other essential toiletries, are intended to support the welfare of the prisoners.

As part of the visit, the group was taken on a guided tour of the facility and shown key areas including the prison kitchen, the clinic and other units within the premises.

In an interview with Adomba Adwoa Agyapong , the leader of the delegation, Ustaz Umar Abdullah Doha, said the gesture was inspired by the core Islamic principles of generosity and charity.

According to him, Islam enjoins Muslims to be charitable at all times and not only during festive periods such as Ramadan and Eid.

He also challenged the public perception that all prison inmates are hardened criminals. He noted that their engagement with some inmates revealed that many ended up in prison due to weak evidence, mistaken identity, and lack of proper legal representation, with about 50% of them possibly innocent.

On his part, the Public Relations Unit of the Kumasi Central Prison, Corporal Emmanuel Boateng Agyemfra, expressed profound gratitude to the association for the support.

He lamented that the current government allocation of GH¢5.00 per inmate daily for feeding is woefully inadequate given the rising inmate population, and called for more frequent support from the public.

He appealed to philanthropists, religious groups, NGOs and corporate institutions to emulate the shining example of the Bibiani group, while urging all citizens to be law-abiding to avoid incarceration.
