Abofour Health Centre Takes Mental Health Outreach to Kwapanin Community

Offinso South Municipality, Ghana– This morning, the Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) outreach team from Abofour Health Centre extended its weekly mental health awareness initiative to Kwapanin, a community within the Offinso South Municipality.

The team conducted child welfare clinic activities focused on educating nursing mothers about mental health, related conditions, and healthy lifestyle practices that support the well-being of both mothers and infants.

The session combined routine child welfare services with targeted health education, giving mothers practical guidance on recognizing early signs of mental health challenges and adopting habits that promote overall family wellness.

The outreach forms part of the ongoing weekly mental health awareness program run by the Michael Kyei Baffour Psychiatric Mental Health Unit at Abofour Health Centre.

The unit’s goal is to reach a wider audience across the municipality and beyond, improving public understanding of mental well-being and reducing stigma around mental health issues.

“Mental health is integral to maternal and child health,” a member of the outreach team noted.

“By bringing these conversations directly to communities, we can equip mothers with the knowledge and support they need early on.”

May is recognized globally as Mental Health Awareness Month, marked by the color purple.

The Abofour Health Centre team said it will continue to use the month to intensify outreach and community engagement efforts.

The Michael Kyei Baffour Psychiatric Mental Health Unit runs weekly initiatives aimed at making mental health education accessible at the community level, with a focus on prevention, early intervention, and healthy living.
