Apostolic Nuncio Warns Against Commercialization of Eucharist in Nigeria

The Apostolic Nuncio to Nigeria, Archbishop Michael Francis Crotty, has expressed concern over the growing trend of “commercializing the Eucharist” among Catholic Priests in the country.

In a recent interview with ACI Africa, he emphasized the need for Priests to preserve the dignity of the Eucharist and avoid practices that compromise its sacred nature.

Archbishop Crotty called on Catholic Priests to embrace holiness as the foundation of their vocation and to avoid excessive showmanship and carelessness during liturgical celebrations.

He stressed that the liturgy “cannot be taken for granted” and that practices such as using liturgical vestments outside their proper context and prosperity preaching “diminish the sacred character of our worship.”

Despite the challenges facing the Church, Archbishop Crotty encouraged Priests and the faithful to trust in God’s sovereignty and power.

“We must continue lifting our hearts in prayer, because God can do all things and he is willing and able to see us through all our difficulties,” he said.
