Drunk Driver Remanded in Custody for Causing Fatal Accident

A 50-year-old driver, Richard Botwe, has been remanded into police custody by the Nkawie Circuit Court in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

Botwe is accused of driving under the influence of alcohol and causing a fatal accident that resulted in the deaths of three individuals, including a bus driver and two pupils.

According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on June 11, 2025, when Botwe, driving a Kia Rio, veered off his lane and collided head-on with an oncoming school bus in Atwima-Mim township.

The crash injured 19 people, including the school bus driver, a female teacher, and 17 pupils. Unfortunately, the bus driver and two pupils succumbed to their injuries after being rushed to the hospital.

A breathalyzer test conducted by the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) revealed that Botwe’s blood alcohol content was 0.135 percent, exceeding the legal limit of 0.08 percent. In his caution statement, Botwe admitted to consuming alcohol the night before the incident.

Botwe’s plea was not taken, and he is expected to reappear before the court on July 11, 2025. The court has remanded him into police custody pending further proceedings.
