Welfare Hub Emerges Overall Winner Among Seven Groups in MoMo Fintech Middle Belt Competition in Kumasi
Welfare Hub, led by Mohammed Salifu, has emerged as the overall winner of the MoMo Fintech Lab Middle Belt edition of the Hackathon held at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi.
The Welfare Hub is an innovative digital platform designed to simplify the collection of welfare contributions among groups and institutions.
The team emerged top among four innovative teams that have secured places in the national grand finale of the MoMo Fintech Lab Hackathon, which will be held in Accra.
MoMo Fintech Lab brought together young innovators to develop, refine and pitch technology-driven solutions to challenges within Ghana’s financial services sector during its five-day event at the Impact Building of KNUST, from October 26th- 30th, 2026.
Aside from Welfare Hub emerging as the overall winner, Sus Vault, led by Jeffrey Owusu Peprah, placed first runner-up.
EaziPay, represented by Fosu Boateng Klinsman and his team, secured the second runner-up position, while the Merchant ShiftBook, led by Alberta Kissiwaa, placed fourth.
These four teams will represent the Middle Belt Zone at the national grand finale in Accra to compete with other successful contestants from the other zonal competitions.
Addressing the ceremony, Mr Paapa Osei, Chief Legal, Regulatory Affairs and Reputation Management Officer of MobileMoney Fintech Limited (MMFL), explained that the MoMo Fintech Lab was aimed at nurturing young talents and transforming their innovative ideas into sustainable businesses.
He continued that the programme attracted 1,791 applicants from all 16 regions, while Kumasi Hub received 415 applications, from which 19 qualified entries were selected through a rigorous process and assessment.
Mr Osei disclosed that the applications received demonstrate the growing enthusiasm among the Ghanaian youth for financial technology and entrepreneurship.
The Chief Legal, Regulatory Affairs and Reputation Manager Officer at MMFL stressed that the initiative is a platform that gives young entrepreneurs access to mentorship, industry partnership and business development support to create practical solutions to challenges facing individuals and businesses.
He called on the contestants to prioritise customer needs in developing their products, emphasising that successful innovation must provide practical solutions rather than merely demonstrate technological capabilities.
Mr Osei urged them to embrace collaboration that would sustain fintech businesses, as it requires a combination of technical expertise, knowledge, marketing skills, and an understanding of regulatory requirements.
“It is important to build customer confidence through effective data protection, fraud prevention, transparent pricing, and appropriate security measures, as with “Fintech”, trust is not an extra feature, but the foundation,” he stated.
He encouraged contestants who did not make it to the national finale to remain committed to their ideas, as failure to progress in a competition should not discourage them from pursuing their entrepreneurial ambitions.
“The broader vision of MoMo Fintech Lab is to strengthen Ghana’s innovation ecosystem, develop sustainable fintech enterprises, create employment opportunities, and improve access to financial services,” Mr Paapa Osei said.
