Two Sentenced to Two Years Each for Stealing NHIS Motorbike in Effiduase
The Nsuta Circuit Court in the Sekyere Central District of the Ashanti Region has sentenced two men to two years’ imprisonment each for stealing a motorbike belonging to the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) at Effiduase.
The convicts, Oppong Stephen, alias Gye Nyame, 25, a trader, and Samuel Owusu Antwi, alias C-Jay, 20, a motor mechanic, both residents of Effiduase, pleaded guilty to the charges of stealing.
The court, presided over by His Lordship Simon Nketiah Gagah, handed down the sentences on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.
According to the prosecution, led by Inspector Nicholas Amoako, the complainant, Williams Kwarteng Asare, is an accounts officer at the Effiduase NHIS office.
The prosecution told the court that on August 29, 2026, Mr Asare closed from work and rode an unregistered Royal motorbike belonging to the NHIS to his residence. He parked the motorbike in front of his house, near the police barrier at Effiduase, before retiring to bed.
However, the following morning, he discovered that the motorbike, valued at GH¢16,000, had been stolen. He subsequently reported the matter to the Effiduase Police.
As part of investigations, the police mounted surveillance, which eventually led to the arrest of Stephen. During interrogation, Stephen admitted stealing the motorbike and identified Samuel as his accomplice, disclosing that the stolen vehicle had been kept at Samuel’s residence.
Stephen subsequently led the police to Samuel’s residence at Juaben, where he was arrested.
The stolen motorbike was retrieved and conveyed to the police station, where it was impounded for evidential purposes.
The prosecution further told the court that the two accused persons later led investigators to the scene of the crime and demonstrated how they had removed the motorbike from the complainant’s residence.
They also made confession statements in the presence of an independent witness, which formed part of the evidence presented before the court.
Following their conviction, the court ordered the prosecution to release the recovered motorbike to the National Health Insurance Scheme.
The two convicts were subsequently sentenced to two years’ imprisonment each.
