Galamsey has worsened under your tenure – Catholic Priest of Kumasi Archdiocese cautioned

KUMASI – A Catholic Priest of the Catholic Archdiocese of Kumasi, Rev. Fr. Louis Cecilia Adu-Poku, has issued a strong caution to President John Dramani Mahama, urging him to use his remaining years in office to secure a positive legacy.

Delivering a message during a church service in Kumasi, the outspoken priest said Ghana is not heading in the right direction and called on the President to listen to truthful and discerning voices.

Fr. Adu-Poku accused the Mahama administration of failing to honour its promise to end illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, within its first 100 days.

“You promised to stop Galamsey within your first 100 days, we’ve gone beyond that… Galamsey has worsened under your tenure,” he stated.

He lamented that citizens who openly speak about national challenges are often attacked and insulted on social media, a situation he said discourages honest feedback to government.

“Respectfully give listening ear to people who will tell you the truth. This nation in all indication is not going the right direction,” he stressed.

The Priest further alleged that there are unseen actors working behind the scenes to influence the destiny of the country.

“Some of us have prayed. And we know people who are working behind the scenes to turn this nation over,” he said.

In a direct message to the President on legacy and accountability, Rev. Fr. Adu-Poku said:

“You have a few years to leave the scene. It is either you allow God to make a name with you or disgrace yourself before you leave the scene.”

He however assured the President of the Church’s continuous prayers, noting that the role of the clergy is to intercede for leaders while speaking truth to power.

“On our part we are going to pray for you because God has chosen us to do that,” he added.

Rev. Fr. Louis Cecilia Adu-Poku is known in the Kumasi Archdiocese for his advocacy on moral formation and national development issues.
