Local Governance: Seek for Peace and Harmony for a successful regime- Oboguman Hemaa to MCE
Obogu, Asante Akyem South – The Paramount Queen Mother of the Obogu Traditional Area, Nana Afua Opokua II, has called on the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Asante Akyem South, Hon. Maame Sarfoah Appiah, to promote peace and peaceful co-existence in her administration for a successful tenure.
The caution from the Queen Mother follows renewed tension between the MCE and some youth in Obogu, a community in the Asante Akyem South Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
According to reports from the community, tension escalated on Sunday, 23rd August, 2026, when four persons alleged to be National Security operatives, in the company of the MCE, Hon. Maame Sarfoah Appiah, allegedly invaded the Obogu township and assaulted some youth believed to be in opposition to the MCE. The incident is said to have left three persons injured.
One of the victims, Oscar Aniakwa, speaking to the media, alleged that the men initially accosted his senior brother, Akwasi Ampofo, over an allegation of careless driving and further accused him of slapping the MCE on the road during a confrontation.
Mr. Aniakwa described the accusations as unfounded, stating that they resisted attempts by the men to forcibly take his brother to an unknown location after he had been beaten, which led to the broader confrontation.
Reacting to the incident in a media interview, Nana Afua Opokua II, also referred to as Nana Afia Pokua II, condemned the act, describing it as barbaric and uncalled for.
She stated that she has not witnessed such an incident in the traditional enclave before and urged the MCE to comport herself and foster peace and harmony in Obogu to enable her to govern successfully as the political head of the Municipality.
“I have not witnessed such barbaric and uncalled for situation like this in our enclave. The MCE should put herself together to allow peace and harmony to exist in Obogu township so she can pursue her ruling as the MCE in the Municipality,” the Queen Mother said.
*Call on Government and NDC Leadership*
Nana Afua Opokua II further called on the central government and the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to call Hon. Maame Sarfoah Appiah to order.
According to her, failure to address the conduct of the MCE could make the government unpopular in the Asante Akyem South Municipality.
She emphasized that local governance thrives on unity and mutual respect between traditional authorities, political leadership, and the youth, and called for calm among residents of Obogu.
As at the time of filing this report, efforts to get a response from Hon. Maame Sarfoah Appiah on the allegations were ongoing.
